International applicants

Admission Requirements

Once you have decided which programme of degree you want to study at the University of Leipzig you can start the application-procedure. So first of all you have to check if you meet all the admission requirements. After that you do the application.

1. University Entrance Qualification

To be eligible for a BA-programme, you need a highschool diploma that is considered equivalent to the so-called University Entrance Qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung).

There are institutions that help you to find out if your highschool diploma would be accepted as such.

If you do not have a highschool diploma equivalent to the University Entrance Qualification you can take a special qualification course at the Studienkolleg Sachsen.

If you wish to apply for a MA programme you need a university degree that is at least equivalent to a BA-degree. There are two options how to find out, if your degree would suffice:

Further information about these administrative procedures can be found on the website of the International Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) of the University of Leipzig. If you have specific questions you may also contact our colleagues of the International Office directly.

2. Language Skills

Since the overall mayority of classes in almost all study programmes is taught in German only, sufficient language Skills are indispensable and, hence, mandatory for your application.

A German level of C1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) is required for your application.

Application Procedure

1. BA-Programmes:

International students who wish to do a BA-programme at the University of Leipzig have to submit their application via the website of uni-assist e.V.

You can find a checklist with all requirements on the website of the International Office.

2. MA-Programmes:

The application procedure for a MA-programme might be more complicated than for a BA-programme. Due to limited capacities, most MA-programmes have special assessment procedures (Eignungsfeststellungsverfahren), where a committee decides if you fit into the programme or not. The requirements for these assessements vary and can be found on the websites of the respective institutes. In consequence, first you have to apply for taking part in this procedure, and then, once you are assessed to be eligible, you can apply for admission via the website of uni-assist e. V.

You can find a checklist with all requirements on the website of the International Office.

The International Office will send you the admission letter, once you completed successfully the admission procedure. You will then get, too, some general information about matriculation and enrollment-procedures, how to get here and the programme of the Welcome Week.

Good luck with your application.

Looking forward to welcome you at the University of Leipzig soon.
