Communication and Media Studies (Bachelor of Arts)

The programme is supposed to prepare students for professional carreers and to provide them with necessary  knowledge, skills and methods in their field of study, so that they gain the ability for scientific work, to think independently and to act in a responsible way.

It aims for the acquiring of competences that prepare for continuative Master programmes as well as for professional practices in the field of communication and media upon obtaining the degree. This builds the basis for further professional opportunities and the ability to learn independently.

A theoeritical and practical approach on communication and media studies is the pursued qualification:

  • by acquiring comprehensive competences about requirements, opportunities and consequences of an occupation in the media,
  • by gaining the ability for historical and systematic analysis as well as for forecasting of communicative and media processes,
  • by the training of the willigness of academic reflexion as well
  • the training of respective academic and professionell skills and proficiencies.

The programme aims for the acquistions of knowledge that is qualifying for a profession and providing compentences in the following fields:

  • Historical and Systematic Communication Studies
  • Empirical Communication and Media Research
  • Media Studies and Culture
  • Media Pedagogy
  • Book Studies/Book Trade
  • Public Relations and Communication Management
  • Journalism

Programme structure:

The Bachelor programme consists of the major subject (Kernfach) and a variable realm of elective courses (Wahlbereich) with the possibility of taking an elective subject from the courses offered by the university and a realm of key qualifications (Schlüsselqualifikationen).

A. Major Subject (Kernfach):
The major subject comprises 150 ECTS (=LP?) including the key qualifications comprising 30 ECTS and the Bachelor’s thesis comprising 10 ECTS.

B. Realm of Elective Courses (Wahlbereich):
The realm of elective courses comprises 30 ECTS. It consists of modules that students are able to choose freely from the modules other institutes of the university offer. Especially the modules offered by other institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Philosophy can be choosen. Furthermore, modules of the Faculty of History, Arts and Oriental Studies, the Philogical Faculty and the Faculty of Theology with which agreements have been made can be choosen. However, it is also possible to take modules from subjects with which no agreements have been made and to have such credited as elective courses.

C. Elective Subject (Wahlfach):
Instead of the realm of elective courses, students can choose a fixed elective subject from the courses offered by the university, faculty or the Instiute for Communication and Media Studies (Wahlfach: “Radio Broadcasting”) comprising of a total of 30 ECTS. Students make the decision upon registration for the programme. A seperate application is not necessary.

D. Key Qualifications (Schlüsselqualifikationen):
The realm of key qualifications comprises 30 ECTS from which 10 ECTS have to be from the faculty-internal offered key qualifications and 10 ECTS from the cross-faculty offered key qualifications. Further 10 ECTS have to be acchieved by doing a manditory internship (Pflichtpraktikum 06-05-1007-1). On request, it is also possible to do a 6-months long internship instead of completing 30 ECTS of key qualifications.
