PhD Project:

The Tabletop in the Exhibition Space. Interactional Practices of Acquisition (Working Title). The study focuses on the interaction between visitors while using a multi-touch tabletop. The observed system, called ‘ComforTable’, was built during the DFG-funded program ‘CrosssWorlds - connecting real and virtual social worlds‘ (GRK 1780/1). Bringing visitors together on a social-interaction interface which connects the physical and virtual exhibition space in a didactic way was the main goal of the tables developers. Continuing their work, the interaction at the tabletop will be analysed focusing on interactional micro-processes. The study explores the use of the tabletop as well as relations of language and space. Research questions are: Which kind of usage can be inferred from the arrangement of the tabletop in the exhibition space and the communicative situation? How do elements of the tabletop-design become accountable in user-user-interaction? In which ways, by using all semiotic resources, do users coordinate their actions while using the tabletop?

My research and teaching interests are mainly focused on interactional phenomena (or practices) in a multimodal understanding. This interest leads to very different subjects - to human-machine interaction, but also to social media, online communication or persuasive communication. My courses are therefore mainly concerned with tracking down these interactive practices and linking the different subjects with each other.

 

Methodologically, I focus on ethnomethodological interaction analysis, which has its roots in ethnomethodological conversation analysis.

 

A third main topic is practical oral communication in the sense of speech and conversation, increasingly with a focus on science communication. My ambition as a teacher is to offer a variety of methods and, above all, to promote self-organized (research-based) learning.
