Our research center promotes knowledge exchange between academia and society as a central component of its work. This involves not only disseminating research findings but also integrating societal knowledge and perspectives into scientific processes. This exchange forms the basis for practice-oriented, future-oriented, and socially relevant research.
We provide platforms for participatory science communication through conferences, workshops, labs, and podcasts. The focus is on co-creation, where researchers and societal actors collaboratively develop solutions for contemporary challenges. This cooperation enables transformative processes to be designed and sustained over the long term.
The research center positions itself as a partner and contact point for anyone looking to develop and implement strategies for social change. Our goal is to strengthen knowledge exchange and closely link research with societal practice to make a lasting impact on social transformation.
mikopa (People and Institutions for Communication and Participation) – Participatory Science Communication and Dialogue Platform
mikopa is a long-term initiative for participatory science communication and a collaborative platform between academia and civil society in Eastern Germany. Every year, we create a space where civil society actors, researchers, and political representatives can exchange ideas about current developments, insights, and experiences.
Our goal is to generate shared knowledge through this exchange and foster sustainable strategies for societal advancement.
Our target audiences include:
- Multipliers from associations, interest groups, and post-migrant communities (e.g., migrant self-organizations)
- Actors from educational institutions, academia, culture, and politics
Students, media professionals, and socially engaged individuals - mikopa stands for exchange, networking, and the joint development of sustainable solutions for our society

Our research center is producing a documentary film in a co-creation process between academia, journalism, and art. The film explores the development and role of Afghan media during NATO’s 20-year mission and their contribution to the state's collapse in the summer of 2021.
This project is funded by the Volkswagen Foundation under its "Science Communication" initiative. The production merges scientific insights, experiences from Afghan journalists, and the artistic vision of two renowned filmmakers.
The 60-minute documentary, set for release in 2025, provides a deep dive into the complex dynamics of media and power in fragile states.
