Frequently asked questions

Learning Agreement: What do I need to know?

The Learning Agreement is your individual course plan. As soon as you have chosen your modules from the course catalog, write them down on the Learning Agreement. Usually, the course catalog for the winter semester is published at the beginning of September, and for the summer semester at the beginning of March.

This course plan oftentimes changes later, for instance, because the course catalog or your preferences change at short notice. However, this is not a problem. If you have to hand in your Learning Agreement earlier, fill it out provisionally for now; you can still change it later.

The module offerings of our institute and the other institutes of the Faculty for Social Sciences and Philosophy, as well as details of the semester planning can be found here: Semester planning in Leipzig

Pay attention to the requirements of your home university: How many courses do you have to take? How many credits do you need? This can vary from country to country.

Do I have to register for modules?

You register for modules belonging to political science or other subjects of the faculty via Tool. More information can be found here: MODULE REGISTRATION

In subjects that are not part of our faculty (e.g. history, American studies, English studies), there may be other procedures. Contact the coordinator of the department where you want to take courses.

May I also attend other (non-political science) courses?

As a general rule, talk to the lecturer. If he or she doesn't mind, it's not a problem. If you have found a course that interests you that is not offered in political science, it is best to email the lecturer and introduce yourself at the first session.

How many credits (ECTS) do I receive for a module?

If you successfully complete a module, you will receive 5 or 10 ECTS credits for it - depending on the scope.

Are courses offered in English?

In political science and some other subjects, seminars are occasionally offered in English, but as a rule teaching is done in German. You should definitely have a good basic knowledge of the German language.

How do I receive my ERASMUS certificate (Transcript of Records)?

Your module achievements are recorded in AlmaWeb. If you have acquired further certificates of achievement and attendance (e.g. from other institutes or from individual courses), send them to the institute’s Erasmus coordinator. Sometimes he or she will receive these certificates directly from the lecturers. If everything is complete, he or she will transfer the credits into a Transcript of Records which will then be sent to you via email.
