Professor Dr. Dennis Hauk holds the Chair for Research on Teaching and Learning in Civic Education at Leipzig University. His research focusses on teaching research and teacher professionalization in the field of civic education and democracy education. In current research projects he investigates subject-specific aspects of teacher core practices, dialogic teaching and artificial intelligence. 

Dennis Hauk studied history and social studies (1st and 2nd state exams) and completed his doctorate in civic education didactics at Friedrich Schiller University Jena (2015). After working as a teacher in secondary schools, he was a postdoc at the Chair of Research for Research on Teaching and Learning  at the University of Jena until 2023.

Professor Dr. Dennis Hauk is a member of national and international societies and organizations, including the Gesellschaft für Empirische Bildungsforschung (GEBF), the European Research Association for Research on Learning and Instruction (EARLI) and the Gesellschaft für Politikdidaktik und politische Jugend- und Erwachsenenbildung (GPJE). He acts as a reviewer for national and international research institutions and high-quality journals.

In his research projects Professor Dr. Dennis Hauk investigates classroom practices in civic education and combines empirical findings of research on teaching and learning with the development of hands-on material for professional teacher learning and teacher education. His special research interests are:

  • Research on (subject-specific) teaching and learning (e.g., dialogic teaching, teacher-student interaction, classroom communication, technology-based classroom talk),
  • Democracy education (e.g., student participation, learner-controlled instruction, digitization),
  • Teacher education (e.g., teacher core practices, use of artificial intelligence teacher professional development),
  • Research methodology (e.g., video-based research, content analysis, mixed method designs).

Current research projects are:

  • Artificial intelligence and Virtual-reality based core practice trainings for civic education teachers (KIVIRAP)
  • Perceiving and promoting participatory teaching cultures in digital learning communities (PUdL)
  • Motives for becoming a teacher in context of the digital change (DIPer)
