Abstract

Daniel Seibert is a research associate at the department of Empirical Communication and Media Research II at Leipzig University. He studied communication and media studies at Leipzig University (M.A.) and sociology and communication and media studies at Rostock University (B.A.). After completing his master's degree in 2020, he worked as a research assistant and research associate in various projects. Since April 2022, Daniel is the coordinator of the SAB-funded project "Audiovisual media content based on artificial intelligence: Analyzing the challenges and potentials of deepfakes in collaboration with science, economy and society". In his dissertation, he investigates the impact of deepfakes on the audience's perception of online media content and also addresses future advantageous applications of deepfake technologies.

Effects of Artificial Intelligence on society

The advances of AI enables almost every Internet user to create highly realistic, but fictional audio and video recordings - so-called deepfakes. As a result, it is becoming increasingly difficult for the audience to determine the authenticity of a recording. Although deepfakes have so far primarily been used to create pornographic content, there is a risk of manipulating the public opinion and damaging the democratic discourse. This research focus is linked to computer science as well as to the training of journalists and the promotion of the audiences' media and digital literacy and is dedicated to the investigation of the impact of deepfakes on the audience's perception of online media content. In addition, future advantageous applications of deepfake technologies are addressed.
